Primarily you can log all foods you have eaten throughout the day (a database with about 1100 foods is included). Eat It! calculates the intake of calories. Furthermore there are 25 nutrients which are also analyzed by the program:

|
Beside this you can store the results of your weight checks and compare them with your diet goals.
Note: For treatment and advice regarding your specific medical condition, you should obtain professional advice.
All comments on Eat It! - whether positive or (constructive) negative - are welcome!

Eat It! is shareware.
You may evaluate Eat It! for one month (30 days). If you want to use it furthermore, you must register it for US$ 15. Updates to all further versions of Eat It! are free of charge.
The program is not limited, so you can test all its features. After 30 days a Shareware dialog is shown at every start of Eat It!. After 45 days an additional Reminder dialog is shown whenever you open the Day View.
You can register at ShareIt! using an encrypted page: https://secure.element5.com/register.html?productid=105177&language=English
Your registration key will be sent immediately after your order is placed, if you are using a credit card.
It is possible to register at PalmGear: https://secure.palmgear.com/sc/buy.cfm?prodid=3942
Your registration key will be sent within 48 hours, if you are using a credit card.
Registration fee: US$ 15.
You have to enter your Palm(tm) User Name (also called 'HotSync User ID') and your RegCode during the registration process. Both are displayed in the Registration dialog. You can open the dialog with the menu entry Options | Registration.
Open the Registration dialog again, write your key into the Registration Key field and tap on the button Registration.
If you haven not entered a correct RegCode, you will get a notification instead of your registration key. In this case, go to the key recovery page. There is a form which you have to fill out:
I will send you the registration key as soon as possible, but it can take several days (weeks) until you get it.
Eat It! will not run on systems with Palm OS(tm) 1.x (Pilot 1000 or Pilot 5000). It needs at least 200 kilobytes of free memory.
First unpack the compressed file EatIt.zip with an appropriate program.
If you have downloaded the self-extracting file EatIt.exe, start this program. Enter the name of the directory to which you want to extract the containing files.
Now the chosen directory contains a new subdirectory with the name EatIt_242. In the following this is called the main directory.
For each of the 25 nutrients you can define a desired supply. The "Deutsche Gesellschaft für Ernährung" (German Society of Nutrition) has published recommendations for men and women in the age of 15 - 65 years, divided in 8 groups. These recommendations are stored in 8 versions of the file EatIt_config.pdb.
For each group there is a subdirectory whose name describes the respective group. Each subdirectory contains a version of the file EatIt_config.pdb with the recommendations for the respective group.
First open the subdirectory of the group you belong to. Now install the containing file EatIt_config.pdb by using the install tool which is part of your Palm Desktop.
You can skip this step, if you want to enter the desired supplies yourself.
Install the file EatIt_food.pdb which is located in the main directory.
And finally: Install the program file EatIt.prc which is also located in the main directory.
Synchronize your organizer. All files will be transferred to your device.
Now you can run Eat It! for the first time. At the first start the food database will be sorted using your organizer's localization information, so it can take about 10 seconds until the main window appears.
Back to Table of ContentsNote: Please create a backup of your database files before updating.
Simply transfer the program file EatIt.prc to your organizer.
In order to prevent data loss, it is essential to make backups at regular intervals. Unfortunately this is an often neglected task.
Eat It! already provides a backup option which transfers your database to your PC during synchronization. But that is not enough because this copy may be overwritten by a flawed version before the error has even been noticed. Therefore, the backup should be copied to a safe place.
Windows users can easily create backups with the Backup Wizard, which is located in the main directory (together with this manual). It guides you step by step through the process of creating a backup or restoring it after a crash (which hopefully will never happen). Since it should be quite self-explanatory, here is only a short overview. You jump from one step to the following by clicking on Next.
Please note: You have to enable the Backup Option in your program's preferences. Otherwise, your database files will not be transferred to your PC.
Besides, a fairly recent version of the Palm Desktop software is needed. If you get an error message at program start that no current version of the HotSync Manager could be found: The current version of the Palm Desktop can be downloaded for free from Palm's support pages (it is compatible to older organizers).
The first page after the welcome page lists all possible tasks. Select here: I want to create a new backup.
Now, you have to select the organizer from which you want to make a backup. Simply select the appropriate Palm Username.
Here, you must enter the directory where your backup file should be stored.
Here you get an overview of all settings. Click on Execute in order to start the backup creation.
Now, you have to synchronize your organizer with the PC. Backup Wizard is waiting until all database files are transferred.
Again, please note: You have to enable the Backup Option in your program's preferences. Otherwise, your database files will not be transferred to your PC.
After creating the backup, a final page will be shown. A new zip archive containing the backed up database files has been stored in the chosen directory. The name of that file is a concatenation of the Palm Username (to be accurate: It' the name of the directory where all data from the chosen organizer are stored) and the creation date.
The first page after the welcome page lists all possible tasks. Select here: I want to restore a previous backup.
Now, you have to select the organizer whose database files you want to restore. Simply select the appropriate Palm Username.
Here, you must enter the directory where your backups are stored.
All backups within the chosen directory containing your organizer's database files are listed. The most recent backup file is selected by default. Choose, which file should be restored.
Here you get an overview of all settings. Click on Execute in order to start restoration.
The database files of the chosen backup will be extracted and installed at next synchronization. So you have to synchronize again in order to complete the restoration.
Only your database files will be restored. You have to install the program file EatIt.prc separately, if it is also missing (e.g. after replacing your organizer with a new one).

When you have found the eaten food, tap on the table entry. Tap on the button Cancel to abort. In both cases you will return to Edit Eaten Food (Fig. 3).
If you can't find a food with the Search Field, tap on Search. The following dialog will be opened:
First, enter one or more (separated by spaces) search criteria into the Search Field.
When using more than one criterion, you can apply one of the following Search Options:
Finally, tap the button Start to perform the database search. This may take a few seconds. You will be informed about the progress.

Fig. 20: Preferences - General View
Start Weight and Goal Weight are used in the window Weight.
Calories Limit is used in the windows Day View and Calories.
Select the Unit Option to use metric units, otherwise you can use pounds and ounces.
If you enter the weight of a food using ounces, it will be converted into grams and this value will be used for all further calculations. The original and the converted value can differ in a range of 0.5 gr, which is not important in most cases. But if you define the typical portion of a food as 1 oz and you eat 10 portions, the differences grows up to 5 gr (about 0.17 oz). So you will see 9.9 oz instead of 10 oz as the weight.
You can choose with the Category Selector which category should be shown when you open the dialog Select Food or the window Food.
For the windows Calories and Weight: You can decide with the Direction Selector whether new entries should be displayed on the left or on the right side of the diagrams.
Eat It! can backup its database when you synchronize your organizer. This may slow down the process of synchronization, thus you should select the Backup Option only from time to time.
Fig. 21: Preferences - Nutrients View
You can write the desired supply for each nutrient into the fields of the Amount Column.
To free some memory: You can delete all records of eaten foods which are saved in the Day View prior to a certain date. Use the menu entry Record | Purge to open the following dialog:
All records will be removed from the database which are saved prior to the date you have chosen with the Date Selector. To confirm the purge tap on the button OK or tap on Cancel to abort.
